Yes! We are going on a supermarket safari! I am proud of the supermarket tour at Jumbo Cuijk.
What is a supermarket safari?
Dis is a tour of the supermarket where the grocery coach explains which supermarket foods are better left out but also where the gems are.
Why a tour of the supermarket?
To fight obesity! Quite simply, modern foods contribute to the obesity epidemic by bringing together powerful 'sensations' with scientific precision. An attractive appearance, a good 'mouth feel', a nice aroma and a sophisticated mix of sweet, salty, sour, bitter and the newly created flavour umami make you keep eating longer than you intended. Substances that people are known to be addicted to, such as sugar, are also added. In short, highly processed supermarket food is designed to predispose consumers to overeating. Excessive eating is also encouraged by offering the food in large economy packs and touting it with costly marketing campaigns that leave you salivating in the supermarket.
Inspired supermarket owner
A few years ago, I met the inspired Jumbo supermarket owner Joop Bosmans and his wife Anita van de Camp. They had experienced for themselves what pure and unprocessed staple foods and a balanced lifestyle can do for their health and fitness.
Bolstered by this eye-opener, they planned to implement the health theme in their shop. Of course, the supermarket continues to serve a very broad target group, but for those interested in a healthy lifestyle they think a supermarket should offer choice assistance. In doing so, the message should be mainly positive and the gems of health in the supermarket should be able to be highlighted more.
I myself had been doing this for years-a supermarket safari with my clients. Later, this tour was elaborated in the book The Grocery Coach. Joop and Anita liked this concept so much that I had the honour of doing a supermarket safari for product managers in their shop. Then Anita picked it up and it was a resounding success! It will therefore be organised more often.
Not only in this shop but throughout the Netherlands, meanwhile, grocery coaches trained by me organise supermarket tours!
Book The shopping coach
This 'guide' is a handy reference book that suggests lots of ways to improve your diet. You may want to do everything right the first time, but don't lose sight of the big picture. You may be very concerned about that one biscuit with your coffee, but if you drink five bottles of wine a week, it is better to tackle that habit first. It's a good idea to analyse your lifestyle from a helicopter view: start with the biggest areas for improvement and zoom in on the details later.
